West Berkshire Museum is a popular museum situated in the historic Granary building and the Cloth Hall, that have a fascinating history to tell in their own right. The museum houses varied collections with galleries that include displays on: the history of hot air ballooning, Newbury’s role in the civil war, an 18th-20th century costume collection and an insight into traditional crafts such as beer and basket making.
For a day out with a difference how about trying your hand at paintball? Hotshots gives you the chance to play solider for the day at one of their 20 games zones set in 120 acres of local woodland. Please note that children need to be aged 11 or over to take part.
The Kennet & Avon Canal Trust is based at the Stone Building in Newbury and offers canal trips on board the ‘Rose of Hungerford’. Private cruises can be arranged along the Kennet & Avon canal but for public weekend cruises you can just turn up on the day.
Inside Newbury’s 17th century Granary on the Wharf you’ll discover Desmoulin, a delightful art gallery selling a range of quality ceramics, glassware and jewellery, as well as paintings, photographs and even furniture. All the items on display are available to buy and as much of the work is by local artists buying something from the gallery would make the ideal souvenir of your time in Newbury.
Highclere Castle is home of the Carnarvon family and dates back to 1842. The architect Sir Charles Barry, who is better known for designing the Houses of Parliament, designed the castle. Highlights include its beautiful gardens and extensive grounds and the Egyptian relics brought over by the Lord Carnarvon after his discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Newbury is well known as having one of the country’s finest racecourses and is home to 28 days Flat & National Hunt Racing each year. Apart from its race meetings it is also home to various conference and exhibitions throughout the year. A new grandstand was recently opened in 2000 to give race goers more viewing space and have added to the appeal of this excellent course.
